Teacher Workforce.
What we Do.
At the Thompson Policy Institute on Disability, we are committed to developing a thriving teaching workforce prepared to serve all students, especially those who have been historically underserved. We collaborate closely with educator preparation programs (EPPs) and school districts to enhance the quality of teacher preparation, ensure equity in access to the profession, and drive innovative solutions to school staffing challenges.
By combining year-long, immersive teacher residencies with on-the-job mentorship with an experienced educator, our model builds capacity within schools while improving teacher retention, strengthening school culture, and elevating student outcomes.
How We Do It.

Strengthen Teacher Preparation.
At TPI we support high-quality, hands-on training aligned with credential coursework through full-year residency programs.

Build Meaningful Partnerships with EPPs and Districts.
We build sustainable, strategic partnerships that align school staffing needs with preparation program goals.

Drive Innovation in Staffing Models.
We design residency models that remove barriers to entry for aspiring teachers that also help to address district vacancies in critical shortage areas (math, science, paraprofessionals, or substitutes). These models also enhance teacher collaboration and support instructional continuity for students.

Host Design Academies for Teacher Apprenticeship Programs.
We facilitate a Design Academy to guide teams of district leaders, educator preparation programs, and union partners through the teacher apprenticeship application process. In this three-part virtual workshop series, participants explore key components of successful apprenticeship models, receive expert guidance on overcoming barriers, and leave prepared to submit for state or federal approval. The Academy supports cross-sector collaboration and accelerates pathways into the teaching profession.
