Our Focus Areas.

At the Thompson Policy Institute on Disability (TPI), we envision schools and communities where inclusivity flourishes and positive changes take root. We work alongside the disability community to develop and improve equitable, accessible, and nurturing learning and community environments for all through integrated research, policy, and practice.

We focus our work in four key areas. In PK-12 education, we help schools become more inclusive by supporting strong leadership, system change, and hands-on professional learning for all educators. Our FAST (Families, Agencies, and Schools Together) program builds stronger partnerships between families, schools, and service providers, helping everyone understand the special education process and create better learning plans for students. Through our Teacher Workforce initiative, we partner with educator preparation programs and school districts to strengthen and diversify the teaching profession, with a focus on preparing educators to serve historically underserved communities. And through our Post-Secondary Education, Employment, and Independent Living efforts, we support young adults with disabilities in planning for meaningful futures through education, job training, and independent living tools. Together, these areas reflect our commitment to building inclusive systems where everyone thrives.

PK-12 Education.

Creating inclusive schools requires more than good intentions, it takes bold leadership, system-level change, and well-supported educators and staff. Our work is grounded in evidence-based practices and delivered through hands-on professional development, embedded coaching, and tailored technical assistance.

Families, Agencies, and Schools Together (FAST).

FAST aims to educate families, service agencies, and the medical community about the Special Education process; foster strong, collaborative relationships between families and schools; enhance the skills and knowledge of school and community-based providers; and support the development of high-quality learning plans for school-aged children.

Teacher Workforce.

We are committed to developing a thriving teaching workforce prepared to serve all students, especially those who have been historically underserved. We collaborate closely with educator preparation programs (EPPs) and school districts to enhance the quality of teacher preparation, ensure equity in access to the profession, and drive innovative solutions to school staffing challenges.

Post-Secondary Education, Employment, and Independent Living.

We are committed to ensuring that individuals with disabilities have full access to meaningful post-secondary education, training, and competitive integrated employment. Through innovative tools, targeted training, and person-driven approaches, we help young adults and the professionals who support them plan for a thriving future.
